Khao Chi Chan- The Largest Buddha Image in the World
Khao Chi Chan is one of the famous landmarks in Pattaya. It features a giant sculptural image of Lord Buddha which is more than 100 meters high, carved out of the rock using laser technology. After that, it was inlaid with gold leaf, a process that took almost a month to complete. It is one of the biggest Buddha images in the world.
The mountain was originally mined for U.S Army and Air Force projects at the local Utapao Airport during the Vietnam War. The mountain was left sheer face after continued mining for several years. In 1995 with the idea of Somdet Phra Yannasangwon, a giant Buddha carving on the side of the mountain was hatched.
This Buddha image is officially called Phra Phutta Maha Wachira Uttamopat Satsada, in 1996 construction and was inaugurated on the day of the 50th anniversary of King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s accession to the throne. The image of the Buddha is a sitting cross-legged, with one hand resting on his knee and the other in his lap is engraved into the northern face of Khao Chi Chan.
The area surrounding the mountain is one of the spectacular views, filled with lush green grasses, palm trees, flowers, ponds, and open-air pavilion. Walking along the paved pathways will bring you right to the base of the mountain where you can observe the detailing of this large image. There is a small lake at the foot of the mountain filled with lilies and lotus flowers. There are several sign boards located around the park telling of its history, which makes learning about the place easier for the tourist. You will also come across several monks here as this place is home to a small temple and several shrines. The whole place is quite relaxing and you will surely appreciate visiting this place.
To satisfy your hunger there is some assortment of vendors in the parking lot serving food and drinks. You can also visit other famous destinations nearby such as Nong Nooch Gardens, Viharn Sien, Silverlake Vineyard, and Wat Yansangwararam. All of which are in nearby proximity.
The entry is free at Khao Chi Chan, however, there are several donation boxes around where you can make a small offering to help with the upkeep of the beautiful sight. It is open daily from 9 AM to 6 PM. The exact location of this amazing place is- Soi Kao Chi Chan, Tambon Na Chom Thian, Amphoe Sattahip, Chang Wat Chon Buri. You can also reach here by Baht bus or motorbike taxi in 20-30 mins from the center of Pattaya at a cost of 500 Baht.
