Located in the Samut Songkhram province, this picturesque place is just a ride away from Bangkok and you can commute through public transport to reach here and the journey will be worth it. The stalls are literally on the railway tracks and hey! What’s a “railway” market without a railway track?

Minutes before the arrival of the train, these stalls shift a meter or two. The train runs 8 times a day through this market so as this process. This is a peculiar thing we find in this market. A mandatory picture of the train on that track will surely make you revisit those memories.

The market has been around since the year 1905. The officials built the railway track to deliver fresh goods from time to time and hence a railway right in the middle of it. And the rest, as they say, is history! The market has everything you love in Thai markets. It is always better to give the luxury of time for this market and enjoy the place to its core. The warm welcoming smiles of the vendors will surely lure into buying the fresh produce they offer. Even better would be riding the train through the market to witness the market unfolding.

The Maeklong Railway Market is about 80 kilometers outside of the city of Bangkok. Depending on the city traffic, it takes just over an hour to get there. To get there, some of the ways we suggest would be to take a minivan which departs from Bangkok Southern Bus Terminal (Sai Tai Mai) or you can get to the market by train which takes about 3 hours in total as you have to change trains as there are no direct trains to this place. Look up the train time tables so that you can plan ahead and have a hassle-free trip. The usual opening hours for the market will be around 06:00 to 18:00. Double check these before so that you won't get disappointed.

Foodies will surely find Thai delicacies lined up. The shops are mainly stalked up with Thai sweets, meat, seafood, vegetables, fruits, and drinks. This place sells stuff at such reasonable prices than in Bangkok that one would be awe. It is purely a visual treat for the visitors.

If you run late enjoying the local culture to the fullest, there is no need to worry as there are plenty of hotels, hostels, etc., available in Maeklong town. There are some amazing hotels available in Amphawa area too.

The cafes that you can find along the tracks will be relief but these places will be jam-packed with tourists, so if you want to get your hands on some snacks there are plenty of items in this market that you can munch on if you get really hungry like dry fruits, fresh fruits and veggies, ice creams and what not. It is always a good idea to start during the morning hours because the place can get really hot at times. So, in order to enjoy the real “Thai” affair, head onto the Maeklong railway market and indulge in some of the local cultures they have to offer.
