Poovar, located at the southern tip of Thiruvananthapuram is a tourist village in the state of Kerala. Poovar is a conjunction of the Malayalam words 'flower' and 'river'. Marthanda Varma, a great ruler named this village after watching bloomed flowers fall into the Neyyar river. Adorned with Coconut and Mangrove forests, Poovar is a lush town with ineffable beauty. Since the summers in Poovar are humid and hot, it is ideal to visit during the winter season which begins in the month of November and lasts till February. The Poovar beach is not just any ordinary beach but it is where the river, sea, and lake meet the golden shores so visiting the estuary is a must. You should also visit the other beaches like the Shanghumukham Beach which stars a beautifully designed idol of a Mermaid. You can also boat on the backwaters of Poovar and view the picturesque sceneries that Poovar withholds. There is an active fishing population as most of the locals depend on fishing for their living so there are no beach activities. However, you can shop at the local markets to get a whiff of the Malayali culture. You will also get a lot of Ayurveda-based products. The people of Poovar celebrate Onam with competitive boat races and the usual calm of the place has a rush of adventure every year. Poovar is well-preserved and unexplored with abundant flora which brings you to a state of tranquillity you wish you felt every day.
